We hold social events for our members throughout the year. Some events are for the whole family, some are for children with special needs and their siblings, some are just for siblings and others are just for parents/carers.
We aim to support families through the social events we offer and also on a more individual basis. We aim to listen to our members needs and offer not only emotional support but wherever possible practical support also.
We aim to be a voice for our members when issues that affect them need to be addressed, and to let service providers and those involved with the care and education of our members and their children know when things are going right.
Wigwam recognises that siblings of children with special needs can face issues that other children may not. “Growing up with someone with special needs can be very rewarding and very difficult at the same time. When someone in the family needs a huge amount of help and support, this can have a negative impact on other family members. The biggest issue for child siblings is not getting enough attention from their parents” (www.sibs.org.uk)
Many of our children are now growing up to be young adults and we wish to continue supporting families through the transition from school and children’s services to the world of adult services.
