DisabledGo Access Guide features more local venues

GDA News June 25th, 2013

In 2012, the States of Guernsey commissioned professional disability surveyors, DisabledGo, to produce an online guide that would help disabled islanders and visitors find out whether a venue is accessible before setting out from home. 500 local shops, hotels, restaurants, sports facilities and transport links were included in the guide.

In April 2013 the team from DisabledGo returned to the island to consult with islanders as to which venues they would like to see added to the guide. The GDA hosted a meeting on behalf of DisabledGo where members of the public were invited to find out more.

DisabledGo surveyors have since completed 26 new guides, 20 of which are detailed access guides to restaurants, hotels, sports facilities and medial practices. The newly added venues will go live on the DisabledGo website in early August.

The guide is not just for wheelchair users, it is also a valuable resource for people with other impairments like hearing or sight loss.

Disability and Inclusion Strategy

News from Guernsey Disability Alliance

In April, the Social Policy Group (SPG) did not approve the Disability and Inclusion Strategy to go to the States in July as hoped. They are committed to moving forward with the Strategy and the principles within it but have asked Emilie Yerby, States Disability Officer, to provide some further information on particular points. The most likely date for the report to go to the States is now November this year.
